White House Ebola Czar's Job: Contain Political Fallout

As Ron Klain begins his job as President Barack Obama’s Ebola Czar on Wednesday, his agenda will include not only stopping the Ebola virus from spreading, but also containing the political damage that three cases on U.S. soil have brought upon the president and his Democratic Party.

One fatality and two infections in the U.S. amount to a small number, but the three cases created a media storm that — with congressional elections just weeks away — could not have come at a worse time for Obama and the Democrats.

Here to fix the problem for the president is Klain, whose nomination last week raised immediate questions about why the president chose a lawyer with a great reputation as a campaigner and administrator, but someone with no public health policy experience.

“What we were looking for is not an Ebola expert, but rather an implementation expert," White House spokesperson Josh Earnest. "And that's exactly what Ron Klain is. He is somebody who has extensive experience in the federal government.”

From the start, Obama was adamant that the U.S. was at little or no risk of a serious outbreak. The recent appearance of Ebola cases, however, is raising questions about the administration's competence.

More than a public health issue, White House officials believe they have a messaging problem that it hopes Ron Klain will fix, says former White House aide, Tevi Troy.

“The American people aren’t that well versed in the details of what’s going on, but they do see the public communications," he said. "And this is an extent to which it is a messaging problem.”

Republicans have accused the president of not doing enough to protect the American people and point to his refusal to impose a travel ban.

The administration has moved to stem that criticism by announcing new measures restricting passengers from affected countries to arrive only at certain airports where they can undergo screening, and ordering tougher guidelines for health care workers.
