When harvests fail, farmers suffer. And if analysts are correct, that’s what’s about to happen to the olive oil market with prices predicted to rise by between 30 and 60 percent. It’s all because of a mild autumn in the olive-growing countries of the Mediterranean, which just failed to kill off the deadly olive fly. Our Italy correspondent James Renaults has been inspecting the damage.
Workers in central Italy use a machine to shake down olives from the groves. In a good year, one tree heremight yield 50 kilos of olives. This year, it yields just 20. In this olive grove, you’ll get a real sense of the devastation of this year’s harvest. The trees look reasonably normal. Their leaves are quite healthy. But flies have attached the olives. And just trying to find olives here is reasonably difficult. Butif I just pick one here, it’s discolored. She is the third generation of her family to work on this farm.
I’ve never seen anything as bad as this. Even my father who worked here before me doesn’t remember anything as bad as this. This is the worst season we’ve ever had. I’m very disturbed by it, but I have to have faith in my trees. They are healthy, and I hope that next year’s harvest will be OK.
It bottles the oil and exports it all over the world. But its most important , its pickiest, fussiest and most perfectionist market is at home.
No, no, no. It’s inconceivable. I’m from Sicily. I couldn’t even begin to imagine cooking without oliveoil. It’s in my DNA. There may be a few places in Italy in the north where people use less oil. But in the last 20 to 30 years, even those who once cooked with butter or lard have now switched to olive oil.
In the isles, next to the expensive bottles, I ask one couple what turns out to be a rather laughable question—could they live without olive oil? Their answer barely needs translation. No, no. For us Italians, there can be no substitute. So no one here will be switching to lard. Italians who are struggling with recession and high unemployment will have to find more money for one of their most basic products. For that, blame the weather and the fly.
