Tanmei is expected to make landfall along the coast between shikoku and honshu island between the night of September 30 and the early morning of October 1, similar to typhoon feiyan.
Japan's meteorological agency estimated that typhoon tanmei could sweep across the islands from Oct. 30 to Oct. 1, with extensive damage possible from western Japan to northern Japan.
The operator of kansai international airport said Wednesday that it planned to close two runways seven hours before the typhoon hit and inform general passengers and airlines before it was announced.
Kansai airport was affected by typhoon feiyan on April 4, leaving about 8,000 passengers and staff stranded at the airport on the artificial island.
Japan's meteorological agency said the path of the typhoon is gradually shifting to the north and east, and will approach Okinawa and omami tomorrow with a very strong wind. As the typhoon moves slowly, the impact may be prolonged.
